Odawara Castle was rebuilt in 1960 to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the proclamation of Odawara as a city including the three -tier five-storey donjon.  Odawara Castle was listed as one of the 100 Fine Castles of Japan by the Japan Castle Foundation in 2006.  During the Muromachi period, Odawara Castle had very strong defenses.  First, it was situated on a hill.  Second, it was surrounded by moats  enabling the defenders to repel attacks by warring factions. wara in 1590, Toyotomi Hideyoshi forced the surrender of the ruling Odawara clan through a siege and then ordered the fortifications destroyed.
