The Ogasawara Islands were once known as the Bonin Islands - formed about 48 million years ago by volcanos that built an oceanic crust. Its main islands are Chichijima ‘Father Island’ and Hahajima ‘Mother Island’ which are the only ones that are inhabited with a total population of only 2500 people. Although the islands are some 1000 km away, they are part of Tokyo City. Yet, in every sense, it is about as far away from Tokyo are you can get. This is the domain of frolicking dolphins, whales, brown boobies and the albatross - not buttoned-down businessmen forever in a rush.
