Goa was once a Portuguese colony smack in the middle of India. Portugal maintained rule there for over 400 years. Goa is made up of a unique blend of cultures and its food and architecture reflects this. Since the sixties, Goa has been attracting visitors - mostly hippies and pilgrims visiting Catholic and Hindu shrines. Following them were the flashpackers and now mass tourism. Goa looks different from other parts of India, mainly because of the long-term colonial presence and the European architecture of many buildings.
