The ruin of Toin Garden constructed by Empress Shotoku in the 8th century was a place for receptions for court nobles. The wooden structures are modern reproductions, although the garden stones and pond are original. Toin Teien is a recent recreation of the original from the Nara period. The pond has an undulating topography of islands and coves which is spanned by both a flat bridge and a curved bridge. The pond also has an imitation beach made from pebbles and a model of houraisan - legendary island of immortals.
