Lake Tazawa is a caldera lake in Akita Prefecture, northern Japan. It is the deepest lake in Japan at its deepest it runs 423 meters. Because of its depth, it never freezes. On the lake the statue of Princess Tatsuko reigns supreme. A girl named Tatsuko was so beautiful that she prayed for eternal beauty and youth every day. One day she heard a voice that told her "drink the water of the lake and your wish will be granted." As she gulped the water she was punished for her arrogance by being transformed into a dragon and destined to live in the lake forever.
