Tsukuba Science City is one of the world's most energetic attempts to encourage and improve the quality of scientific discovery. The city was modeled on other planned science cities including Brasilia, Novosibirsk, Bethesda, MD, Cambridge, MA and Palo Alto, CA. Construction of the city centre, the University of Tsukuba and 46 public research laboratories began in the 1970s. The city became operational in the 80s and began its quest to stimulate scientific discovery amidst nature away from Tokyo but not so far away as to discourage top notch researchers.
