Nagano is the capital of Nagano Prefecture and was the site of the 98 Olympic Winter Games. The city evolved as a temple town around Zenkoji, Nagano's most famous attraction and one of Japan's most important temples. In culinary terms, Nagano is best known for its soba noodles, known as shinano soba. Outside Nagano City, besides all the winter sports parks, a favorite attraction is the Jigokudani Monkey Park with is 200 wild snow monkeys cavorting in the park and its hot spring.
