Hue was once upon a time the seat of power in Vietnam and is connected to the Nguyen Dynasty who ruled from 1802 to 1945. Emperor Bao Dai abdicated when Ho Chi Minh's revolutionary government took power. Hue's main landmark is the Perfume River with the old city and the Citadel on one side of the waterway. Much of the riverside has been turned into a pleasant promenade. Outside of town, imperial tombs are an add-on to the largely restored Imperial Citadel, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Hue's main claim to fame.
