Beppu is Japan's onsen capital with the largest volume of hot water in the world apart after Yellowstone and the largest number of hot spring sources in Japan. Beppu contains nine geothermal hot spots, which are referred to as the nine hells of Beppu. These take the form of multicolored volcanic pits of boiling water and mud and one geyser.
